Before You Begin

Fifty days. One book. A joy the world can’t give and can’t take away.

Why 50 Days?

Joy can feel rare in a world filled with stress, struggle, and constantly changing circumstances. But Philippians offers something different: a joy that isn’t dependent on everything going right.

For ten weeks, we’re walking through Philippians together at Authentic Life Church, pairing each Sunday’s message with five devotionals throughout the week. Because what happens on Sunday matters—but what happens Monday through Friday helps form us.

Think of Sunday’s sermon as the seed and these 50 days as the watering. Each devotional is short enough to finish but designed to help you go deeper into God’s Word and put what you’re learning into practice.

How to Use the 50 Days

Set aside about 15 minutes each weekday, preferably at the same time each day.

Start by reading the Scripture before the devotional. Then work through the reflection questions, write down your answers, complete the day’s “Move,” and spend some time in prayer. Each week also includes a memory verse to carry with you.

And don’t do it alone! Invite your spouse, a friend, your Life Group, or your family to join you.

What about weekends? They’re blank on purpose. Saturday is an opportunity to rest, and Sunday is for gathering, worshiping, and hearing the next passage together.

The Journey

10 Sundays. 10 passages. 50 days.

We’ll journey through the entire book of Philippians together, beginning September 20 and ending Thanksgiving week. Each Sunday introduces a new passage, followed by five weekday devotionals that take us deeper into what we’re learning together.

Missed a Day?

You probably will—and that’s okay.

Life happens. Days get busy. And when you fall behind, it can be tempting to either cram several devotionals into one sitting or give up altogether.

Don’t.

You don’t have a debt of missed devotionals to repay. Simply come back to today and start again.

Your consistency was never what held this journey together. God’s faithfulness is. Grace isn’t the consolation prize for people who failed at discipline; it’s what makes the discipline possible in the first place.

Come back today. That’s the whole instruction.

Week 1 September 21–25

Joy Has an Anchor

Philippians 1:1–11

This Week

Paul opens his most joyful letter from the least joyful place imaginable, and before he says a single word about how to have joy, he shows us where it’s anchored: in who we belong to, in the work that God finishes, and in the glory that rests upon God and His children. Not one item on that list depends on your circumstances, which is exactly the point.

Week 2 September 28–October 2

Nothing Wasted

Philippians 1:12–26

This Week

Paul takes the three things that should’ve crushed his joy—his imprisonment, his critics, and his uncertain future—and he shows the Philippians that every one of them has been swallowed up by something larger. This is the week we learn that God is never limited by our circumstances and is entirely capable of running His purposes straight through the middle of what has gone wrong.

Week 3 October 5–9

Joy That Stands Together

Philippians 1:27–30

This Week

Four verses, and Paul packs an entire vision of the church into them. This is a group of people who belong to a different kingdom, living like it in a city that doesn’t share its values, holding a line that no one abandons, pushing forward together, and refusing to be frightened by the pressure that comes with all of it. Notice how little of this week is something you can do alone.

Week 4 October 12–16

Joy That Bends Low

Philippians 2:1–11

This Week

This week Paul answers a very practical question about how to treat the people in your church, and his answer turns out to be the deepest theology in the letter. Christ went all the way down before He was raised to the highest place, so the way up in the kingdom of God has always run downward. That isn’t a paradox to admire from a distance but a direction to walk today.

Joy That Shows Up on Monday

This Week

After the highest theology in the letter, Paul comes straight back down to the ground and starts talking about complaining, ordinary obedience, and the way a Christian life actually looks on a normal Tuesday. This is the week we discover that the most supernatural thing about you may be how you handle the parts of your life that no one applauds.

Joy Has Names and Faces

This Week

This is the week Paul stops teaching and starts naming names. Two men get a paragraph each, and what Paul praises in them isn’t talent or results but faithfulness, genuine concern, and a willingness to risk something. Read it as a portrait of the kind of person the church can’t function without, and then ask honestly whether it’s a portrait of you.

Joy Worth Losing Everything For

This Week

Paul lays out the most impressive religious résumé in the ancient world and then throws the entire thing away in a single sentence. This is the week we find out what our own confidence is quietly resting on, and what it would cost to stop counting the things we’ve always counted.

Joy That Keeps Moving

Philippians 3:12–21

This Week

Paul has just described the most radical trade a person can make, and now he admits he hasn’t arrived. This is the week for anyone tired of their own progress, because the man who wrote most of the New Testament says it flat out that he’s still pressing on, still straining forward, and still refusing to let his past set the ceiling on his future.

Week 9 November 16–20

Joy That Guards Your Mind

Philippians 4:1–9

This Week

This is the most quoted chapter in the letter, and it’s worth noticing where Paul places it. The famous verses about anxiety and peace sit immediately after two women in the church who couldn’t get along, which tells us that Paul never treated peace of mind as a private matter. This week is about what you do with your thoughts and who you do it with.

Week 10 November 23–27

Joy That Has Learned Contentment

Philippians 4:10–23

This Week

The letter closes the way it began, with partnership and gratitude. Paul thanks a church for their generosity, explains what he has learned about contentment, and tells them that what they gave was received by God as an offering. This last week lands on Thanksgiving, which isn’t something we arranged, and the passage could hardly be better suited to it.
