On Mission

Remember The Blues Brothers movie back in 1980? It’s become a classic cult comedy. The line, “We’re on a mission from God'' is playfully woven throughout the film. Here’s a quick synopsis of the plot: One of the Blues brothers is released from prison. He and his brother team up to bring their old band back together to raise money to save the orphanage they had been raised in from foreclosure.

So, hey, Jesus was not exactly like the Blues brothers. He didn’t wear black suits, hats and dark sunglasses while cruising around Nazareth crashing cars. But, he was constantly harassed by the “authorities” and Pharisees. And, he, too, was definitely on a mission from God! Similar to the Blues brothers, Jesus was out to save the world, which had been foreclosed by Satan. We were like orphans who had lost our relationship with God the Father and lost our Garden of Eden homeland. Jesus put together his band of twelve disciples, and off they went to rescue and restore humankind.

The Blues brothers’ crazy antics took them all around the Chicago area. Along the way, they told those they encountered that they were on a mission from God.

Have you told anyone lately that you are on a mission from God?

You, too, are like the Blues brothers. You have been released from the prison of your sin. Jesus has fueled you with the Holy Spirit to take the message of the Gospel all over your world. You’ve got your testimony of what Christ has done in your life. You’ve got friends, family, neighbors, co-workers, acquaintances, people you know living in other cities, people you don’t know living in other countries. Your mission, should you accept it, is to share eternal life with orphans living in a lost world that is being foreclosed. Put your band together, and get going!

Elwood Blues: “It’s 106 miles to Chicago. We got a full tank of gas and half a pack of cigarettes. It’s dark and we’re wearing sunglasses.”

Jake Blues: “Hit it.”

Elwood Blues: “We’re on a mission from God.”
