Ordinary People

1 Corinthians 1:26-29 NIV

[26] Brothers and sisters, think of what you were when you were called. Not many of you were wise by human standards; not many were influential; not many were of noble birth. [27] But God chose the foolish things of the world to shame the wise; God chose the weak things of the world to shame the strong. [28] God chose the lowly things of this world and the despised things—and the things that are not—to nullify the things that are, [29] so that no one may boast before Him.

I love the stories in Scripture where ordinary people were called by God to do extraordinary things. People like Moses, who was tending sheep on the backside of the desert when God appeared to him in a burning bush and called him to lead the children of Israel out of Egypt. People like David, a mere shepherd boy, who defeated the giant Goliath so that everyone might know that there was a God in Israel. People like Nehemiah, a cupbearer for the king of Persia, whom God called to rebuild the walls of Jerusalem. People like Esther married a pagan king, who used her royal position to save the Jews from extermination. People like Peter, Andrew, James, and John were fishermen who became fishers of men for the Lord Jesus Christ. The list could go on and on.

Yes, God chooses and uses ordinary people to do extraordinary things. He doesn’t need our ability, but rather our availability. He uses ordinary people who have nothing of their own to offer, but their faithfulness and willingness to say “Yes” to God. So let me ask you…

How could God use you? Look at your situation and your surroundings. Perhaps God has placed you in your school, your job, your family, or your neighborhood to do something special for the Lord Jesus Christ. God is calling you right now; all you have to do is say, “Yes, Lord!”  Will you make yourself available to Him? Remember, God uses ordinary people to do extraordinary things for His glory!
